Sysop put a 28.8 on node 4 and my 14.4 still pulls the same on
downloads. Am I missing something, or is the upgrade $180 for nothing?

You are not missing anything. The limit is the line between here and
you, not the modem on either end of it. Call at three in the morning
and see what your 14.4 does then.

That is not a trick and it is not a joke. The number was real, it was worth

wide because the font advances 900 units on a 1600 unit em, which is
9.000 pixels at 16. Nothing here is centered by eye. At 81 characters
the illusion would be over.
2 Brown is #AA5500, and this line is drawn in it.
It is the one color in the sixteen that breaks the 00 and AA pattern.
IBM added circuitry to stop it looking like mud. The in-sequence value
#AAAA00 is what a cheap clone monitor showed instead.
3 Backgrounds only go up to seven.
In text mode the high bit of the attribute byte was blink, not
background intensity. Bright text on a dark ground, never bright behind
text. Nothing on this plate sets a background above 7, because the
hardware could not draw one.
4 The accounting is in the header, not a profile.
Post count, join date and rank sit beside every single message. You
could not read a thread without reading everyone's totals. Standing was
ambient, and it was ambient in one room.
5 Time remaining.
A session was finite and it counted down on screen, so conversation was
rationed by the phone line. The clock in the status row runs in real
seconds and it is the only number on this plate nobody earned.

Standing was public, bounded and legible, because it was made of one room's
history instead of a score computed about you somewhere you cannot see.
The deal did not get worse. It got taken over. What replaced the board's
number is a score computed about you, across everything you do, that you
cannot see, cannot audit, and also cannot take anywhere.

The forum is not extinct. It is endangered, which is different, and the
