The @ cross-references, the italic counts, the [new] and [*] flags and the breadcrumb are from www.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/, capture 20 December 1996: 33 headings, 13 carrying @, counted from the file. The editor login nav row and the statistics line 1,037,375 sites - 17,042 editors - 162,942 categories are from dmoz.org, capture 13 October 1999. The 2002 DMOZ capture is not used: its stat line reads -49,077 categories, a negative count, so it is a spliced capture rather than history. The green #669933 band, #cccccc sub-nav and #666666 stat text are read out of DMOZ bgcolor attributes, because that page has no stylesheet either. All files are in reference/2-discovery/directory/.

The 24 submissions are invented and are not real sites or real people. Their headings are this plate's editorial judgment, not a record of where Yahoo! actually filed anything. That judgment being arguable is the point of the exercise. The Yahoo! and DMOZ logo GIFs are held as reference only and are deliberately not shipped: both pages carry an all-rights-reserved notice. The [new] and [*] flags are rendered as the text of their own alt attributes rather than as the original images.

Deliberately absent. When Yahoo!'s directory launched or closed, and when DMOZ did: neither date is in these captures. Any claim about why directories declined, or about search engine market share: not sourced here, so not asserted. The Yesterweb link directory is offline; its ordering description and its 30-day decay are quoted from a 1 January 2023 Wayback capture holding 596 links.
